‘MECCANO FOR GROWN-UPS’ - YORKSHIRE STUDIO DEBUTS FURNITURE KITS AT LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL
The concept has been likened to Meccano for grown-ups. Relational participatory design that fosters active co-authorship, drawing explicit lineage from constructivist toys, turning furniture assembly into a tactile game. The furniture configurations are built from a hardware system called the Components Manifest, from which various furniture iterations spring into life.
DESIGNED FOR PLAY AND POSSIBILITIES
‘The idea that space is an experience that we create from how we feel led us to design furniture for play, investigation and the reinvention of possibilities. Using tactile mechanical components and the language of pattern to evoke a sense of wonder and experimentation,’ says Otter Mononoke, the studio’s founder.
The exhibition marks the studio's first appearance in London and an important milestone in the development of a system which offers an engaging alternative to conventional self-assembly furniture and puts The SAVARIND Concept philosophy in front of a wider audience.
