STUDIO CLAUD CHRISTIAN LAUNCH NEW LIGHTING COLLECTION ‘FLORA’ AT LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL
Award winning design studio Claud Christian will be launching their new flower inspired lighting collection, ‘Flora’ at Shoreditch design week’s House of Icon.
The designer duo, Claudia and Christian, are driven by a desire to create designs that hold their own as beautiful objects as well as working in harmony with everyday functionality. This philosophy is particularly evident in their approach to the ‘Flora’ collection, where each piece exists in two distinct states: illuminated and unilluminated. When switched off, the light reads as a sculptural object, its form and materiality commanding attention much like a large arrangement of flowers in a vase. Once illuminated, the piece is transformed, revealing a new character as light interacts with its paper surfaces, creating pockets of tonal light and unexpected shapes.
‘We are super excited to be displaying a new series of work at House of Icon during LDF this year, centered around a new lighting design, ‘Flora’. This is an idea we have wanted to explore for years, but only recently did we give it life - the concept being a large floral floor lamp, as if huge flowers coming out of a pot - leaning into that oversized, other worldly scale. Alongside this, we have also developed a series of pendants and other lighting that shares the same DNA’
Christian Cowper, co-founder of Studio Claud Christian
Founded in 2019, the design studio was created by designers and ceramicists Claudia Surrage and Christian Cowper. The duo focus on creating playful furniture, lighting and ceramic pieces for interiors as well as collaborating with furniture manufacturers across Europe and the U.S.
Alongside ‘Flora’, the studio will also present ‘Plumus’, a generously curvaceous pendant whose torus-like form emerged from a series of experimental studies on the wood lathe. The design celebrates the beauty of process, translating hand-turned explorations of form into a distinctive lighting piece that is both expressive and quietly architectural.
‘We really look forward to reintroducing the Plumus to the public alongside the new Flora. The Plumus is definitely a crowd pleaser, and a piece that works so well in a mixture of interior settings from wellness retreats, to Parisian cafes; we’ve had the pleasure to see the Plumus play a part of some beautiful interior projects!’

CLAUDIA SURRAGE:
Having recently completed a Master’s degree in Ceramics, and with a background in 3D design, Claudia is fascinated by the balance between traditional craftsmanship and the ways these processes can be reinterpreted through contemporary design. Following a ceramic artist residency in Jingdezhen, China, she is now focused on introducing ceramics into the studio’s creative offering, bringing a fresh material perspective to its design practice.
CHRISTIAN COWPER:
Christian’s work is driven by the expressive potential of materials and an enduring fascination with the processes that shape them; whether from the hand, tool or machine. A background in bespoke furniture and silversmithing has cultivated a rigorous approach to craftsmanship, informing a design language defined by architectural quality, material sensitivity, and quiet refinement. A recent role as design ambassador for 3DaysofDesign and collaboration with Leica in Copenhagen has further enriched Christian’s palette for how designers can stretch boundaries with no loss of functionality.
STUDIO CLAUD CHRISTIAN:
Claud Christian is an award winning British design studio based in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, representing the collaborative work and professional partnership of furniture and product designers Claudia Surrage and Christian Cowper.
Having first met in a ceramics studio, the relaxed and creative environment laid way for the pair to naturally discuss ideas and interests. These ideas led to a first collaborative collection, ‘Primitive Forms’ which aimed to translate ceramic processes and materials into wooden furniture designs - a project which garnered recognition and helped establish the studio.
Studio Claud Christian now specialises in creating in-house handcrafted lighting, ceramics and furniture as well as working on design collaborations with brands, manufacturers and artists across Europe and the U.S.
