GROUND Lounge is a low lounge chair from the wider GROUND collection. It explores how materiality can create multi-sensory experiences within the home. The project began with personal experience of elderly family members’ vision loss and considers how furniture can be recognised and understood through other senses, such as tactility and scent.
Although the project was initially informed by visual impairment, GROUND is intended for a broader range of users. The pieces use a consistent tactile surface and symmetrical forms to make the furniture more predictable and recognisable through a single touch, contributing to a more inclusive domestic environment.
The collection is made from granulated and expanded cork, combined with a natural latex binder, and hand-pressed in a 3D-printed mould. This cork-latex composite creates an irregular tactile surface and a near-body-temperature sensation. The natural woody scent of cork also brings an outdoor sensory quality into the interior, inviting users to get closer to the objects and engage with them physically.
