The Iconic Contour Chair - Held in the Permanent collection at the V&A Museum
A heated sheet of acrylic was shaped using a pneumatic ram, creating a gently contoured seat that appears almost to float above its slender steel frame. The process allowed the material itself to determine much of the chair’s form, an approach that would continue to underpin Colwell’s work throughout his career.
The chair won Colwell the RCA Silver Medal and was selected for the V&A’s Modern Chairs exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1970. Two examples subsequently entered the V&A’s permanent collection.
