The Shape of Memory at Material Matters The Shape of Memory at Material Matters
The Shape of Memory exhibition marks a significant moment in Deniz Beck’s transition from architect and heritage practitioner into a more explicitly research-led artistic practice. Developed through the one-year R&D project Stories You Can Hold, the exhibit reflects her interest in how the fragments of a place can be translated into contemporary design without losing their integrity.

For the past year, Deniz has been working at Fort Gilkicker, a Victorian sea fort in Gosport, asking one question: can you take something real away from a heritage site without reducing it to a souvenir?

Together with artist Sally Tyrie, Deniz collected what normally gets swept away during building work: iron nails, stone shavings, burnt timber, flakes of old green paint. To them, this is not waste; it is a material archive of the fort.

Deniz also scanned the fort using LiDAR on her phone. The scans came back broken and incomplete, which is exactly how memory works. Sally turned that into designs. Craig Palmer, a metal spinner in Portsmouth, made them into a light fitting in etched brass, coloured by fire.

The point of this project isn't to create one beautiful object; it is to develop a model that other heritage sites can use, one in which the site, the artists and the makers come together to create collectible designs that carry real cultural meaning. Something people keep and cherish, rather than a throw-away souvenir. And the artists and makers are properly credited and paid for it.
