David Colwell is a British designer and maker and a pioneer of thoughtful, material conscious design. Since the 1970s, his work has explored how intelligent structures, renewable materials and thoughtful making can create furniture, buildings and public spaces that use fewer resources and work in harmony with their environment.
Working from his studio and workshop on the Welsh borders, steam-bending ash is central to David’s practice, allowing the natural strength and flexibility of timber to become part of the structure itself. Alongside furniture, he has designed passive solar buildings and undertaken public commissions, including seating conceived not simply as an object, but as a way of bringing people together.
Ideas of conviviality, shared space and social connection run throughout his work. His public seating in particular reflects a belief that good design can encourage conversation, gathering and a stronger relationship between people and place.
His work combines engineering, making and an enduring curiosity about how things work. From early experimental pieces now held in the V&A’s permanent collection to recent designs including the Design Guild Mark-winning ROXi chair, David continues to develop work that is purposeful, efficient and quietly innovative.
At Material Matters, David Colwell Design will present a selection of recent work demonstrating an approach rooted in material efficiency, structural intelligence, conviviality and a belief in designing for a lighter future.
