Deniz Beck is a Turkish-born, Portsmouth-based conservation architect, cultural producer and founder of Sustainable Conservation Trust (SCT). She is known for her work with historic buildings, monuments and underused heritage places, bringing together sensitive architectural regeneration, adaptive reuse, artist collaboration and public engagement. Her approach is rooted in close observation of existing fabric: its marks, repairs, decay, alterations and future potential. She sees historical buildings not simply as structures to be restored, but as layered places made of memory, material, use, loss and reinvention. Rather than treating their conservation as a fixed act of preservation, she sees it as an evolving conversation between buildings, communities, makers and memory.
Through SCT, Deniz has developed projects that activate heritage places through temporary interventions, exhibitions, workshops, skills training and creative partnerships. Her work often connects architects, artists, craftspeople, young people and local communities, creating new ways for people to experience, understand and care for historic buildings.
The Shape of Memory marks a significant moment in Deniz’s transition from architect and heritage practitioner into a more explicitly research-led artistic practice. Developed through
the one-year R&D project Stories You Can Hold, the exhibition reflects her interest in
how the fragments of a place can be translated into contemporary design without
losing their integrity.
