At the heart of my practice is a fascination with how thread can create movement, depth, and optical interaction. By layering and tensioning coloured threads across a surface, I build complex visual patterns that shift depending on perspective, light, and distance. The process is both highly controlled and responsive, requiring careful planning while allowing the material itself to influence the outcome. Each piece is handcrafted and unique, reflecting a balance between precision and experimentation. Materiality plays a central role in my work. I am particularly drawn to unconventional and often overlooked surfaces such as cork, wood, leather, and reclaimed materials. Cork initially attracted me because of its unique elasticity, texture, and responsiveness. Unlike rigid surfaces, it offers a subtle flexibility that works in dialogue with the tension of the thread, creating a dynamic relationship between structure and movement. More recently, I have expanded my practice to include industrial offcuts and surplus materials, exploring how waste streams can be transformed into high-value artistic and design applications. Sustainability is embedded within my creative process, not simply as an environmental consideration but as a design philosophy. I actively seek opportunities to work with discarded or underutilised materials, extending their lifecycle through thoughtful craftsmanship. Rather than forcing complete standardisation, I develop adaptable frameworks that allow each material’s natural characteristics to remain visible. This approach embraces variation, celebrating imperfections and encouraging a deeper appreciation of material origins.
My work sits between textile art, fine art, interior design, and contemporary craft. While each piece functions as an artwork in its own right, I am increasingly interested in how these techniques can be applied within architectural and interior environments. The sculptural qualities of thread, combined with tactile surfaces such as cork and wood, create opportunities for immersive installations and bespoke interior features that engage both visually and physically. A key aspect of my practice is slow craft. I value processes that prioritise longevity, quality, and meaningful engagement over speed and mass production. Through ongoing experimentation with colour blending, tension systems, and material combinations, I aim to create works that are both visually compelling and structurally enduring. My interest lies in pushing traditional textile techniques beyond their conventional boundaries while maintaining a strong respect for craftsmanship and material integrity.
Through e.L.s designs, I continue to explore how thread, colour, and reclaimed materials can intersect to create innovative surfaces and objects. My goal is to produce work that sparks curiosity, encourages sustainable thinking, and demonstrates the creative potential of materials that might otherwise be overlooked. By combining traditional textile knowledge with contemporary design approaches, I seek to create distinctive pieces that connect art, design, and environmental responsibility.
